Introduction
This data tool shows the estimated number of deaths in Canada so far today (since 12:00 midnight) and so far this year (since 12:00 midnight on January 1).
In the time that it takes one clock to come full circle, it is estimated that one person in Canada has died. Each clock corresponds to a cause of death for the population you select.
* The estimated frequency of mortality
It is estimated that one person in Canada will die every ... in 2026. This is based on the most recently available population estimate in 2025 and the relationship between population and mortality over the last 10 years where mortality data is available (2015 to 2024).
Visit the Technical notes to learn more and visualize how we calculated these estimates.
Purpose
By illustrating the frequency with which someone in Canada is likely to pass away from different causes, this tool helps to show:
- the current trends in causes of death among people living in Canada
- the most common causes of death among particular populations
Beyond being educational, this tool can help policymakers discover topics and populations of focus for public health initiatives.

Note: this figure only displays data if it is a top-10 cause of death for the selected grouping. When no data is shown, it does not mean that 0 deaths occurred in the grouping.

Mortality data table
In the following table, you will find the top 10 causes of death among all Canadians. Data is optionally broken down by sex or by age. For each grouping, you can either display the number of deaths recorded in 2024 or the estimated number of deaths that will occur in 2026, as well as the average estimated time between deaths.

This tool is an update and expansion of the original Canadian Health Clock. The orginal clock was developed in 2019 in a collaboration between Health Infobase and Drs. Bernard C. K. Choi and Douglas G. Manuel. Thank you for your innovative work towards health risk communication and knowledge translation, without which this present update would not have been possible.
