About COVID-19 vaccination and approved vaccines

About COVID-19 vaccination and approved vaccines

Vaccination programs

  • COVID-19 vaccination began in Canada on December 14, 2020.
  • You’re currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccination if you’re 6 months of age or older and you don’t have contraindications to the vaccine.
  • The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) issues statements with recommendations on the use of COVID-19 vaccines. Briefly, NACI recommends:
    • a complete primary vaccine series to provide protection against COVID-19
    • booster doses after completing the primary series to restore or improve protection against COVID-19. Please refer to the COVID-19 vaccine chapter of the Canadian Immunization Guide for more details on:
      • booster eligibility
      • timing of a booster dose
      • recommended products
  • As part of the fall 2022 COVID-19 booster program, NACI recommends a COVID-19 vaccine booster 6 months after your last COVID-19 vaccine dose or SARS-CoV-2 infection.
    • A booster dose should be offered to people at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19, no matter how many booster doses they’ve already had.
    • A booster may be offered to all others aged 12 to 64, no matter how many booster doses they’ve already had.

Vaccination status definitions

Primary series

In this report, people have ‘completed the primary series’ (referred as ‘fully vaccinated’ in previous reports) once they’ve received all vaccine doses in the series. The number of doses depends on the specific vaccine product. Booster doses are not part of the primary series.

For 3-dose vaccine (Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty ages 6 months to 4 years):
  • people who have had only 1 or 2 doses are partially vaccinated
  • people who have had 3 doses have completed their primary vaccine series (referred to as ‘fully vaccinated’ in previous reports)
For 2-dose vaccines:
  • people who have had only 1 dose are partially vaccinated.
  • people who have had both doses have completed their primary vaccine series (referred to as ‘fully vaccinated’ in previous reports).
  • moderately to severely immunocompromised people who have had both doses plus additional dose of an mRNA vaccine have completed their primary vaccine series.
For 1-dose vaccine (Janssen Jcovden):
  • people who have had only 1 dose have completed their primary vaccine series.
  • moderately to severely immunocompromised people who have had 1 dose plus additional dose of an mRNA vaccine have completed their primary vaccine series.

Booster doses

Doses after the primary series is completed are defined as ‘booster doses’ in this report (referred to as ‘additional doses’ in previous reports). Please note that this category may include doses given for the following reasons:

  • as a booster dose
  • to complete a primary series (for moderately to severely immunocompromised people)
  • for travel purposes
  • to complete a series where the recipient only received vaccines not approved by Health Canada
