About COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination

About COVID-19 vaccines and vaccination
  • Vaccination programs:
    • 4 COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use in Canada.
      • The COVISHIELD version of the AstraZeneca vaccine is no longer used in Canada as the interim order for its use expired on September 16, 2021.
    • The National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendations on the use of COVID-19 vaccines can be found in the latest NACI statements .
    • People 12 years and older without contraindications to the vaccine are currently eligible for COVID-19 vaccination.
    • COVID-19 vaccination began in Canada on December 14, 2020.
  • Primary series:
    • 2-dose vaccines: Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty® (12 and older), Moderna Spikevax® (12 and older), and AstraZeneca Vaxzevria (18 and older)
      • People who have received only 1 dose are considered partially vaccinated.
      • People who have received both doses are considered fully vaccinated.
      • Moderately to severely immunocompromised people who have received an additional dose of an mRNA vaccine are considered fully vaccinated.
    • 1-dose vaccine: Janssen (18 and older)
      • People who have received only 1 dose are considered fully vaccinated.
      • Moderately to severely immunocompromised people who have received an additional dose of an mRNA vaccine are considered fully vaccinated.
  • Booster doses:
    • NACI recommends a booster dose of an mRNA vaccine for long-term care residents and seniors living in other congregate settings who have received a primary COVID-19 vaccine series at least 6 months after the primary series is completed.

Vaccination coverage by age, sex, and province or territory

A greater percentage of females than males have received a COVID-19 vaccine. Vaccination coverage is highest in adults aged 70 and older .

New Note: Denominators were updated based on Statistics Canada’s population estimates on July 1, 2021 to enhance the accuracy of vaccination coverage calculation. As a result, vaccination coverage rates for younger age groups and for older age groups presented in this report are respectively higher and lower than those presented in previous reports.
