Map of Canadian mental health during the COVID-19 pandemic
Additional notes
Data source
- Survey on COVID-19 and Mental Health (SCMH), September to December 2020 (Statistics Canada)
- Survey on COVID-19 and Mental Health (SCMH), February to May 2021 (Statistics Canada)
Methodology notes
- The population includes adults 18 years or older.
- Differences between subnational geographic levels and the national average are determined based on non-overlapping 95% CIs.
- The Wald method was used to calculate the 95% CIs for high self-rated mental health, high community belonging, stable or improved mental health, moderate to severe symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder, moderate to severe symptoms of major depressive disorder, moderate to severe symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
- The Clopper-Pearson method was used to calculate the 95% CIs for concern for violence in one’s own home and suicidal ideation.
- National estimates reported in the data tool from the 2020 SCMH may differ slightly from the national estimates reported in Capaldi, Liu and Dopko (2021). This is because the journal article excluded certain territorial data to allow comparisons with the 2019 Canadian Community Health Survey. This exclusion affects analyses of:
- high self-rated mental health.
- high community belonging.
