(NEW) Percentage (%) of children and youth who exclusively use non-active ways to get to school
Definition | Non-active travel refers to the use of transportation that does not involve physical activity. This indicator captures the percentage of children and youth who use non-active ways (e.g. car, bus, public transit) and do not use any active ways (e.g. walking, cycling) to get to school. |

Data Source | Canadian Health Survey on Children and Youth (CHSCY), Statistics Canada |
Population | Population aged 5 to 17 years |
Data Available | Sex, gender, age group (5 year, life-course), province/territory, population centre/rural area, household income adequacy, highest level of education (household), Indigenous status, and immigrant status (person most knowledgeable) |
Estimate Calculation | Numerator: Number of children and youth who report that they got to school in the past 7 days by car, truck or van, school bus, public bus, subway, street car or LRT, or other inactive ways. Denominator: Total population, aged 5 to 17 years. This indicator is based on the "transportation to school-7d" variables TTS_005A, TTS_005B, TTS_005C, TTS_005D, TTS_005E, TTS_005F, and TTS_005G. |
Additional Remarks | For children aged 5 to 11, responses are provided by the "person most knowledgeable" (PMK). This might be a parent, grandparent, or guardian. Youth aged 12 to 17 self-reported their responses. Sex is based on reported sex at birth and is drawn from the variable DHH_SEX. Gender refers to current gender which may be different from sex assigned at birth and may be different from what is indicated on legal documents. Gender is based on either self-report for youth aged 12 to 17 years on variable SBG_010, or PMK report on variable RRS4_30 for children aged 5 to 11 years and youth who did not self-report gender. The three response options for gender are "male", "female", or "please specify". Those who specified a gender other than male or female are categorized as non-binary. |
