Measure Description

DefinitionThe Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines (24-H Guidelines) for Adults aged 18-64 years (https://csepguidelines.ca/guidelines/adults-18-64/) and the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults aged 65 years and older (https://csepguidelines.ca/guidelines/adults-65/) provide specific recommendations for adults and older adults that meet the 24-H Guidelines. This indicator uses the surveillance recommendations released with the guidelines (https://cdnsciencepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1139/apnm-2020-0467), which require that individuals meet the specific time recommendations for daily sleep duration (ages 18-64 years: 7-9 hours, adults 65 years and over: 7-8 hours), daily sedentary time (8 hours or less), daily recreational screen time (no more than 3 hours), and weekly moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (at least 150 minutes).
Data SourceCanadian Health Measures Survey (CHMS), Statistics Canada
PopulationPopulation aged 18 to 79 years
Data AvailableSex, age group (5 year, life-course, adults/older adults), highest level of education (household, respondent), household income, immigrant status, and trend (age-standardized)
Estimate CalculationNumerator: Number of adults aged 18 to 79 who meet all components of the Canadian 24-Hour Movement Guidelines for Adults and Older Adults. Denominator: Total population, aged 18 to 79 years.
Additional RemarksThis indicator uses both accelerometer data (MVPA and total sedentary time) and self-reported data (recreational screen time and sleep duration). To be consistent with surveillance recommendations provided by Ross et al., (https://cdnsciencepub.com/doi/pdf/10.1139/apnm-2020-0467) this indicator was analyzed using 1) accelerometer-measured daily average sedentary time of 9 hours or less (not the 8 hours or less for self-reported sitting) and 2) self-reported daily sleep time between 7 hours and 9 hours, 59 min (adults aged 18 to 64 years) or 7 hours to 8 hours, 59 min (adults aged 65 years and older).
