Beginning in 1998, the Government of Canada supported a number of voluntary national surveillance initiatives to strengthen blood safety and oversight in Canada. These included the:
- Transfusion Error Surveillance System
- Transfusion Transmitted Injuries Surveillance System
- Cells, Tissues and Organ Surveillance System
The Public Health Agency of Canada’s Blood Safety Contribution Program (BSCP) administered these initiatives. They provided funding to provinces and territories to support the development and enhancement of systems that monitor adverse events, including:
- accidents related to transfusions
- minor, moderate and serious adverse recipient reaction errors
The BSCP will end effective March 31, 2026.
