Nutrition Surveillance Data Tool from Health Canada

The Nutrition Surveillance Data Tool was developed by the Bureau of Food Surveillance and Science Integration (BFSSI) at Health Canada. This tool presents usual intakes of energy, nutrients and other dietary components using data collected in the 2015 Canadian Community Health Survey – Nutrition. It highlights where Canadians’ intakes fall relative to Dietary Reference Intakes established by the Institute of Medicine of The National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine.

About the graph and table

Please refer to the Technical Notes tab for detailed notes that apply to all of the tables and graphs in the Usual Intake Data Tool.

Due to extreme sampling variability in some provinces, it was not possible to present data by DRI age-sex group. Therefore, we combined DRI age-sex groups into broad age groups: children (1 to 8 years), adolescents (9 to 18 years) and adults (19 years and over). Where possible, estimates are provided for adult males and females separately and combined. It was not possible to report estimates for all nutrients for children and adolescents.

  • E: Data with a coefficient of variation (CV) from 16.6% to 33 .3%; interpret with caution.
  • <3: Data with a CV greater than 33.3% with a 95% confidence interval entirely between 0 and 3%; interpret with caution.
  • F: Data with a CV greater than 33.3% with a 95% confidence interval not entirely between 0 and 3%; suppressed due to extreme sampling variability.
  • AI: Adequate Intake
  • AMDR: Acceptable Macronutrient Distribution Range
  • CDRR : Chronic Disease Risk Reduction Intake Level
  • DRI: Dietary Reference Intake
  • EAR: Estimated Average Requirement
  • n: Sample size
  • P: Percentile, e.g. 'P95' describes the 95th percentile.
  • SE: Standard Error
  • UL: Tolerable Upper Intake Level
