- Five COVID-19 vaccines are currently approved for use in Canada:
- Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and COVISHIELD Verity/Serum Institute of India (SII) (COVISHIELD) are given as two doses.
- People who have received only one dose are considered partially vaccinated.
- People who have received both doses are considered fully vaccinated.
- Janssen is given as one dose. People who have received only one dose are considered fully vaccinated.
- Pfizer-BioNTech, Moderna, AstraZeneca and COVISHIELD Verity/Serum Institute of India (SII) (COVISHIELD) are given as two doses.
- The National Advisory Committee on Immunization’s (NACI) recommendations on their use can be found in the latest NACI statements.
- COVID-19 vaccination began in Canada the week of December 13, 2020.

Vaccine product data reported by Quebec is not broken down by vaccination status. Thus, it is only included in the cumulative percent and number of people who have received at least one dose of a COVID-19 vaccine and not included in the numbers of people partially and fully vaccinated.

Key populations Download key populations data in .csv format
The National Advisory Committee on Immunization (NACI) recommends that we prioritize certain key populations for early vaccination. Although each province has their own vaccination priorities, they are generally taking an aged-based approach by first focusing on adults aged 80 and older and then decreasing the age limit by five-year increments. The territories aim to vaccinate all adults aged 18 and older.

Why have we stopped reporting on vaccination coverage among some key populations?
Previously, we reported on vaccination coverage among:
- Health care workers targeted for priority vaccination
- Adults in group living settings for seniors
Coverage rates in these priority populations are important public health indicators. However, it has been challenging to measure them because:
- Definitions of these populations varied across provinces and territories
- Provinces and territories took different approaches to identify people belonging to these populations among those they vaccinated (the numerator)
- It is difficult to accurately estimate the number of people belonging to these groups (that is, the size of the denominator)
As a result, our vaccination coverage estimates for these groups were far less reliable than our estimates for other populations.
The majority of provinces and territories are taking an age-based approach to their vaccination programs. We have stopped reporting on priority populations and will now report on vaccination coverage among smaller age and sex groups.
